Sage
Sage is the home-team choice in South Africa: rand pricing, a local support organisation, the Pastel installed base that accountants still know, and a South African payroll product that genuinely understands SARS. Sage applied a price increase from 1 October 2026; the reported 2026 rand list for Start, Standard and Plus is below — confirm the post-increase figure before you buy.

What it actually is
Sage in Africa is a partner product: Sage 50 on a warehouse PC or Business Cloud via a reseller. Strength is charts, audit files and manufacturing history. It is not a self-serve naira SaaS, and e-invoicing is never included unless the statement of work names it.
Features
| Feature | Coverage | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Financial reports | Core strength | The file auditors already know how to read. |
| Double-entry ledger | Strong | Sage 50 and Business Cloud are ledgers, not invoicing toys. |
| Inventory | Strong | A common reason factories stay. Confirm the SKU in the quote. |
| Fixed assets | Present | Often in mid-market Sage. Ask the partner which module. |
| Multi-currency | Present | Typical in Business Cloud and mid-market. |
| VAT | Present | Older FIRS VAT reports exist on many Sage 50 sites. Re-test for NTA 2025. |
| Payroll / PAYE | Present | Usually a localised add-on. Ask which Act it encodes. |
| WHT | Limited | Often a customisation, not a module you can tick. |
| Invoicing | Present | Invoices exist. Statutory e-invoice XML is a project. |
| E-invoicing | Limited | Depends entirely on the partner build. |
| Bank feeds | Limited | Desktop Sage 50 is often still a statement import. |
| Accountant portal | Limited | Partner and auditor access, not a Xero-style HQ. |
| Spend / cards | Not offered | Not a spend-management product. |

Best for
- SMEs whose accountant works in Sage
- Businesses wanting local phone support
- Employers who want payroll from the same vendor
Not suitable for
- Teams needing a large global app marketplace
- Multi-entity groups (look at Business Central or Sage Intacct)
Local support
Sage has a large South African operation in Johannesburg and Cape Town, local support and a big network of Sage-certified accountants and Pastel resellers.
Migration notes
Pastel desktop users can migrate to Sage Accounting with Sage’s tools; check how much history moves and keep the Pastel company read-only.
What does Sage Accounting cost in South Africa?
Sage publishes rand prices including VAT. Reported list prices in 2026 were R249 (Start), R499 (Standard) and R799 (Plus) a month. Sage announced an adjustment from 1 October 2026 or the next renewal date; our crawler was blocked from Sage’s pricing page, so confirm the current figure there.
Why do South African accountants still default to Sage?
Pastel. A generation of bookkeepers and practices built their careers on it, Sage’s cloud product inherits that familiarity, and Sage Payroll is a credible SARS payroll from the same vendor.
Sage Accounting or Sage Pastel?
Sage Accounting is the cloud product for small businesses. Pastel Partner/Xpress and Sage Evolution are desktop or hosted products used by larger SMEs. New small businesses should start on the cloud product.
How does Sage handle VAT?
VAT201 reports, VAT on cash or invoice basis, and SA tax codes out of the box.

- SimplePay is the default cloud payroll for South African SMEs on Xero and many on Sage or QuickBooks: PAYE, UIF and SDL, IRP5/IT3(a) through e@syFile, leave and an employee self-service app. Pricing is a base fee plus a per-employee monthly fee, excluding VAT, with a free 30-day trial and an instant online quote.
- Business Central is the leading mid-market ERP step for South African companies outgrowing Sage Accounting, Pastel or Xero — especially distributors and manufacturers. Expect about R1,312 (Essentials) to R1,804 (Premium) per full user per month at list, plus a partner and an SA payroll integration.
- Dynamics 365 Finance is an enterprise ERP for large South African groups — retailers, mining services, financial-services groups — that run many entities and need consolidations, advanced cost accounting and a global tax engine. At about R3,444 per user per month at list, plus a multi-month programme, it is for organisations with an ERP team.
- NetSuite has a solid South African customer base among services, software, fintech and distribution companies with offshore parents or several subsidiaries. Pricing is by quote — an annual base licence plus users (indicatively $129–$199 each per month) and modules such as OneWorld.
- Xero is the main challenger to Sage for South African SMEs: rand pricing including VAT (R450 Starter, R795 Standard, R1,095 Premium from 1 November 2025), feeds with the major banks, and the largest app marketplace. Payroll is a partner app — most South African Xero users pair it with SimplePay.
- Tyms offers South African businesses AI-assisted bookkeeping at $200 per seat per year (about R3,280), with rand billing listed among its supported currencies. It is a strong catch-up and statement-driven ledger, but in South Africa it competes with mature local defaults — Sage and Xero have deeper bank feeds and accountant networks.
