Sage · Xero
Choose Sage if you want payroll from the same vendor and local phone support, or your accountant came up through Pastel. Choose Xero if you rely on add-on apps, want the cleaner interface, or your accountant runs a Xero practice. On features for a typical VAT-registered SME they are close; the deciding factor is usually the accountant.

Which is cheaper in South Africa?
At list, Sage. Reported 2026 Sage prices were R249 and R499 a month (before an increase from 1 October 2026) against Xero’s R450 and R795. Xero’s Starter caps you at 20 invoices and 5 bills a month, so most VAT-registered SMEs compare Sage Standard with Xero Standard.
Which is better for payroll?
Sage, if you want one vendor: Sage Payroll is a mature SARS payroll. Xero users nearly always add SimplePay, which is excellent but is a second subscription and a second login.
Which do accountants prefer?
It splits by practice. Firms with Pastel roots lean Sage; newer cloud practices lean Xero. Ask yours before you choose — they will close your books faster in the tool they use daily.
What about e-invoicing?
Neither is required to do anything yet: SARS has not set a mandatory date. Both will have to support whatever SARS finalises.

- SimplePay is the default cloud payroll for South African SMEs on Xero and many on Sage or QuickBooks: PAYE, UIF and SDL, IRP5/IT3(a) through e@syFile, leave and an employee self-service app. Pricing is a base fee plus a per-employee monthly fee, excluding VAT, with a free 30-day trial and an instant online quote.

- Xero is the main challenger to Sage for South African SMEs: rand pricing including VAT (R450 Starter, R795 Standard, R1,095 Premium from 1 November 2025), feeds with the major banks, and the largest app marketplace. Payroll is a partner app — most South African Xero users pair it with SimplePay.
- Tyms offers South African businesses AI-assisted bookkeeping at $200 per seat per year (about R3,280), with rand billing listed among its supported currencies. It is a strong catch-up and statement-driven ledger, but in South Africa it competes with mature local defaults — Sage and Xero have deeper bank feeds and accountant networks.
